Sheer Poetry

Pink Think: "You will find poetry nowhere unless you bring some of it with you." - Joseph Joubert

I almost didn't want to go back to reality, after four days of camping with the family, when my husband said I would not last a day camping by my lonesome self.

"Well, I could if there was a shower," I retorted.

"And if there wasn't one?"

The thought of no horse shows, no deadlines, no responsibilities, really appealed to me. But I decided to go home with the rest of the family. A shower really sounded good after four days of camping.

What can I say? I am prissy. And proud of it.

We spent two days at Bryce National Park and two days at Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. I haven't done as much hiking in a long time. So many wonderful surprises, like slot canyons, and a 120-foot waterfall:

Remote, beautiful country. Sheer poetry.

While I was "unplugged" for the last few days, I wrote two poems.

Well, more like songs, really. I read them to my family around the campfire. After I read my poem "My Four-Wheeling Dude," my oldest daughter said, "Um, Mom, if you want to write your own songs, you really should do more." She blushed. "I mean..."

"It's true," I said, laughing.

After I read my other one called "Born of Sunfire," my youngest said, "I like that."

That was fun. I think I'm going to try writing more poems.

Today, I got a speeding ticket for driving 20 over 35 mph zone. The cop nicely cited me for only ten over.

I felt like writing angst-filled poetry about the injustice of speed zones changing from 35 to 50 and how I was simply anticipating...

Sigh. It's surprising I haven't gotten ticketed sooner.

So in this depressed state of mind, I took my kids for "chores" like haircuts and shoe-shopping. I bribed them with "fun" things afterwards: I took them to a children's bookstore, the pet store, the library, rented a DVD of Hotel For Dogs and finally, I bought us all banana Icees from the nearby Maverick store.

At the pet store I came this close to buying my youngest a kitten and my boy a guinea pig; I was in such a strange frame of mind. At the library, my youngest said - noticing the book sale - "Too bad we can't stop..."

"Why not?" I said. I herded them in, they picked some books, scored a hard-back bird book for fifty cents, and we went for those Icees.

I drove the speed limit with two kids smiling quite happily in the back seat of our car.

You sound so relaxed. :) Even talking about the speeding ticket -- relaxed. That's great the poetry writing went so well for you. Perhaps the band is tapping into another part of your brain...

Speeding tickets are my downfall in life!! Hate them!

As for the poetry writing...I used to write poems a lot but have recently stopped and I think I need to start it up again. It's very therapeutic, don't you think? I love the title of the one you mentioned. Beautiful!

Camping sounds like fun. We did Moab in May, but haven't gotten back out with all the weather!
Sorry about the ticket. I hate getting them when a street you thought was one thing changes!

I can't write poetry anymore. Ever since my parents asked me not to post my writing on my blog, nothing happens. No inspiration, no thoughts, no phrases. Just blank.

I was just down in Southern Utah in May. So much fun!

I used to love camping. Glad you had such a nice time. :)

I could totally go off camping by myself. Showers aren't necessary; you can just skinny dip in a lake.

Buttons - No poetry? Are your parents Philistines?

Hi Jewel,
The camping sounds so relaxing and refreshing (I want to visit those places!!). So good to hear about how "good" this was for you. And that it led to your poetic side coming out. Wonderful. And I'm guessing this all played over into your time with the kids getting Icees, finding books, etc...

Oh - I hear you on the shower thing! Can't do without that.

It sounds like some lovely bonding time with you family.

I have never been camping. So jealous! LOL

Four days camping sounds like good family bonding time - even if you missed a shower. (I know I would!)

Sounds like an awesome vacation. My hubby and I went there for our honeymoon.
I tagged you with some Crazy Eights over on my blog. :)

I'd love to read your poems.

It sounds like you had a nice time with your family and that you and your kids have quite a cool groove going. : )

Got an ugly ticket that I want to get out of. My friend turned me on to a free site, (no email needed, they make money on advertisements) on how to get out of a speeding ticket. It has a pretty funny video and I downloaded the pdf, and it looks pretty cool. I am going to try it out. It is www.ticket-gone.com Let me know what you think... Bert

Melanie: You know, I never was one to write poetry, but I am liking it a lot. It helps with my prose, too, trying to say things in a more spare, but more powerful language.

PP: Yes, you should start up again!

Sabine: We go to Moab a lot, too. My hubby loves to off-road there.

Lynette: I was going to enter a contest, and then decided to just take it easy right now.

Georgie: I'm sorry. I hope you get inspired again!

Gypsy: *used to*?? I admit, I tolerate camping, but when I see my kids have fun, I'm sold on it.

BJ: Well, the lake was freezing :-). But yes, I know what you mean. When we go to Lake Powell, I don't mind it as much, since we are in and out of the water most of the time.

Lance: Yeah, it was a good vacation that led to good things. :-)

Lynn: I need a propane-powered blow dryer LOL.

Carolyn: Never?? That's probably a first for me to hear. You should try it sometime! PS You can still set a picnic table nice LOL.

LadyFi: That's why we do it, that bonding time. I don't think it's for the dirt, though my kids are always trying to get out of showers.

Rachelle: Really? Yeah, it's beautiful country.

Suzanne: Maybe someday, I'll go public with my poetry. Meanwhile, I keep thinking that I am very much still in the infant stage of things. It's weird, this summer. I am more relaxed about writing, and I think it is spilling over to time with my kids. Which is good!

Bert: I think I will be going to traffic school here soon.
