Pink Think: "Every time we walk along a beach some ancient urge disturbs us so that we find ourselves shedding shoes and garments or scavenging among seaweed and whitened timbers like the homesick refugees of a long war." - Loren Eiseley

School's almost out which means...
...beach days are coming!
Got a preview of it yesterday for Memorial Day. My family and I went boating at Willard Bay, in northern Utah. It has a little strip of beach, perfect for soccer and frisbee. I have fond memories of this beach. My husband and I went there before we married, and I remember the wonderful sensation of youth, no cares, sun on my skin, warm sand between my toes.
Yesterday, for the first time, shared the Willard beach experience with our three children. I watched my kids' faces burnished gold by an afternoon of sun and fun. I thought I had never seen anything so beautiful.

My new novel is set in the ocean.
I wish I could go to the Philippines and soak up the beach experience once again. But memories will have to suffice. And my imagination.
Beach days are coming!

My favorite memory of the beach would have to be cooking steak and corn on the cob on the beach at Lake Powell, and feeling like time didn't matter and who cared about going back to wearing street clothes, that was the life.
Or the time when my nephew and I snorkled across a Philippine bay teeming with an amazing array of coral life like barracudas (baby ones) and what I thought was a shark, to get to an islet luring me with a dreamy shed of turquoise blue.
What is YOUR favorite memory of the beach?

I live like 5 miles from Lake Michigan, so I have lots of them. I like the beach at night. There's something transcendent about not being able to tell where the water stops and the sky begins.
There's a desolate beach in Oregon that I've gone to ever since I moved to the West Coast 20 years ago.
This beach features a giant sand dune, maybe 300 feet high. The first time I ever went there was with a group of guys. The first thing we did upon arrival was to race up that damn hill. Ever hear of "one step forward, two steps back?" I think that was coined in Oregon, by someone trying to climb a giant pile of sand. It's impossible.
One of the first trips I went on with my wife (to-be at the time) was to that beach. I'm surprised she still married me after I "encouraged" her to climb to the top.
They've since built a fine brewery on that beach, so nowadays it's fun to go down there and just kick back. I still climb that dune, along with the kids and the dog. It's our only "must-do" task of the vacation.
BTW if anyone can guess the beach, I'll give you a shout-out in a tweet or blog.
LOVE the beach. You just got me so excited for the beach weather. Even though the beach is about three hours from where I live, I'm excited for the warm weather coming and the possibility that I will soon see the ocean. YAY for summer!!!!
That sounds so lovely, Jewel! I don't have many memories, but I am restless for that "freedom" feel, for sure! Yay for summer!
Santa Maria Cove, Cabo San Lucas:
Horrible sand/gravel, but lovely, lovely water. Before that day I didn't know that oceans could really be as blue as the pictures in travel magazines.
Coronado, San Diego, California:
We got to stay on the naval base there for our family reunion a few times. The beach was forever wide and hot as a stovetop, the water was ice cold, and once I sunburned burned my back so badly it was red for a week or more, but that beach is full of memories.
I can't quite remember it clearly, but I see my family, I was a little girl playing with my parents and brothers at the beach. I don't which one but it's off Manila. I love that memory when it comes to me as my parents separated when I was only 5 years old.
The other one is when I first had the courage to show off my body in a two-piece at Sta. Cruz in front of my boyfriend and his friend and I wandered on my own. It was quite empowering, but I never did it again. ;-) Too mahiyain!
Your beach memories sounds amazing. Especially the one about not worrying about the time passing.
I just had a good beach memory in Honolulu. It was my BFF's 40th birthday and we waded out into the warm water under the dark starry skies and made birthday wishes.
I live somewhat near BJ, so there are actually too many beaches around us. I'm sick of 'em, and I deliberately take them for granted.
Kidding. Lake Michigan has been such a constant part of my life, that there are simply too many memories to pick a favorite.
I haven't been to the beach in FOREVER! Which is a shame because I only live an hour from it. I love the beach... the feel of the sand between my toes... the seawater, and sand in my hair. (maybe not the sand in my hair, but...) I love the ocean.
I have memories of going to the beach in Maine and just sitting there. It was too cold to go swimming or anything but it was nice just sitting there, at least until my parents made me start walking around.
Maybe I'll get to go to it before college.
Thanks for dropping by, btw! Cats are definitely CUTER than the AF guy.
Hadsan Beach on Mactan Island in the Philippines. That's where my husband first asked me to marry him. But many other treasured memories. I was born and grew up an island by the sea so I LOVE.LOVE.LOVE the beach :-) A beach in SoCal ---thats' where we'll be in 2 weeks.
I love the beach. Worst memory was getting lost when I was 4. I wandered about 2 miles away. Lots of best memories, looking for Sand Crabs with my dad, standing and letting big waves crash on you, building sand castles with my own kids. And there was this one beach we went to off Ilo Ilo (I want to say it was on Guimaras, but I can't recall). Beautiful beach, aqua water with a huge Jelly Fish bobbing around, and a monkey which bit me (not funny at the time, but it is a great story now.
Unfortunately, there's no beach near where I am now. But i grew up pretty close to the ocean, so I have lots of great memories. I couldn't pick just one. I just love everything about being there. The scent of seawater, splashing in the waves, searching for seashells...
Love the beach. Love the pic.

Hooray! Hooray! The beach days are here! We spent 4 days camping and hiking at the beach this weekend. Cheers to a long beachy summer!
Ah, the beach! Too many fave memories to mention. That's what happens when you live so close to a real ocean beach!
I'm not sure I have one.
Here in Connecticut, I am about thirty plus miles from the nearest beach, and all of our beaches are incredibly crowded during the summer months.
Going to a crowded beach is not my idea of fun and relaxation.
Funny thing is, I enjoy using the beach as a background in a lot of my stories. I guess in some ways, it's the ultimate vacation trip, because you can always find a spot and enjoy the warm sun, the cool breeze blowing in and whatever you choose to add in to make a perfect summer beach day.
It's funny, I was born in California, lived there for a few years and then moved back when I was a teenager, but we never went to the beach because my mom is petrified of water/swimming! I didn't really get a good beach experience in until my hubby and I went to Cancun a few years ago. It. Was. Amazing. We lounged under a thatched roof cabana and sipped margaritas for three days straight. Hello, paradise!
I grew up near Lake Michigan (in Michigan) and always loved campouts near the beach. Bonfires at night with the moon bouncing off the waves... I miss that.
My favourite memory of a beach is when I lived in Fiji as a teenager and we spent our days snorkelling in crystal clear water over stunning coral reefs like colourful vibrant fairgrounds under the sea...
BJ: That would be so cool to see.
Iapetus: Mmm, Sand Dune Beach?? LOL
If there is water below, I love climbing a sand dune and then racing down on a ski-board.
PP: I can't remember, are you in the Philippines? I would love to go to the ocean, too.
Spy: Yeah, it's a great antidote to the rat race, eh?
Q: How've you been? Sounds wonderful, esp. that blue blue water.
Chandy: What a bittersweet memory. As for the 2-piece, I would never have dared, too, back then :-)
Suzanne: Thanks for stopping here. Your trip to Hawaii sounds like a fun adventure!
Ray: Lucky lucky you
Abby: When I lived in the Philippines, I could have gone more frequently to the ocean. But did I? Nooo :-)
Marivic: How romantic!! And have a blast on your beach vacation!
Sabine: I am laughing about the monkey..sorry. Yeah, those can be pesky things. Had a couple scare my sister in law in Palawan, but made for a funny story.
Gypsy: How neat for you to live close to the ocean as a child!
Mike: Hi. Are you from the Phils. too, by chance?
Stacey: Fun for you!
Heidi: What a great lifestyle.
G: Yeah, crowded beaches are kind of hard to get into. But I bet it clears up some during the off-season. How interesting it figures into your stories a lot. Me, too!
Vivi: That would be the life, to just take it easy in a resort. :-) Once, after my hubby and I spent a few days in Puerto Rico, I wanted him to just leave me there! Fortunately, reason prevailed and he was able to coax me down the coconut tree.
Melanie: I love bonfires!!
LadyFi: That sounds simply amazing!
Watching the sun rise at Nags Head last July in North Carolina with my Beloved and again the setting sun.
Oh here by way of the Funster
The beach you visited sounds wonderful! I too love the beach, and especially the ocean along with it. A favorite beach memory is from my childhood - visiting the Lake Michigan beaches in northern Wisconsin - fun memories!
I live near the ocean, so I have many wonderful memories of the beach. Too many in fact.
Seagulls and Herons... the bats at night by the beach... making sandcastles with my kids.
But the places you have in your memory are awesome
Um wonderful question!
Well, I grew up beside beaches and have so so many memories of them. Childhood picnics. Learning to swim when I was 6 at Pokeshaw Beach
But my best memory would be California when Kelly was 4. Laguna Beach, seeing her and Jim frolicing in the pounding surf. It was magic there. Such a gorgeous place.
My favorite memorise of the beach is feeling the wind in my hair, and looking of the vastness of the Pacific. I loved the feeling of the waves on my legs. I loved all of the Lighthouse and tidepools. Oregon's coast maybe cold, but I still enjoyed swimming in the water! :)
