"Stay" At Home

Pink Think: "My husband gave up all his work to stay at home with the kids, and we split all the duties at home. I do all the boring stuff - like pay the bills, and he does all the exercising for both of us, which I'm very grateful for... I thank him for it regularly." - Erika Slezak, American actress

I am a stay-at-home mom.

Yesterday, this was my schedule:

10:30 Turn-out the horses
10:45 Drive 45 minutes to deliver cookies for daughter's entry to State Fair
11:30 Stand in line while smelling wonderful aroma of bread and getting hungry
12:00 Eat lunch in car; drive back
12:50 Take horses back to their stalls
1:00 Piano lesson
1:45 Be home for two younger kids
2:15 Send son to cub scouts
2:20 Pick up daughter from junior high
3:15 Take son to soccer practice
4:15 Go to cub scouts (I am a wolf den leader)
5:40 Call cub's mom to see if she is picking up her son
5:45 Call oldest daughter to make sure kids are eating dinner
5:50 Arrive home in panic because youngest is not dressed for soccer yet, but fed, thankfully; thank oldest daughter profusely for her help
6:00 Take oldest to Young Women's and youngest to soccer game

Stay-at-home indeed.

***

My husband drove straight to the soccer game from work. I told him I took the cookies in for Sierra. "Gosh, it was a busy day," I said, collapsing in the camp chair.

And my sweet darling husband, whose hard work makes it possible for me to be a stay-at-home mom, said, "Oh? Other than delivering the cookies, what else did you do?"

I had to laugh.

What a fun blog you have. I thoroughly enjoy your style of writing. :)

Hubby's at work, one daughter's at seminary, the other daughters have been asleep, and I've been having fun just sitting here reading your blog!

I'll have to read more posts later, and will be putting your blog in my favorites. :)

Amen! It's crazy that people think if you're a stay at home mom that you don't work...and that you actually get to stay at home! I did it until a few years ago and wouldn't change it for the world. Home raising you kids is the best place to be.

Thanks for the comment. I took the photo for that header on Diamond Mountain.

You are so blessed to be a "stay at home" mom. I so get what you're saying!
Enjoyed peeking at your blog!

Pink Ink said...

Tammy: Glad you enjoy the posts. And thanks for adding me.

Barb: Wow, YOU took the photo? Good job. That's great you got to stay home, too.

Kim: Yes, it's been a blessing (for both me and the family).

It drives me absolutely batty when my husband walks in at the end of his day and asks "So, what did you do all day?" GRRRRR

If he only KNEW!

Prince Balthazar said...

Wow, that sounds like a lot more I could handle in a day. My wife and I both work outside the home, but she is telling me I can quit if I wish and write full-time.

It's a little scary but she believes in me and fortunately, we'd be okay for a while if I did take that leap.

Pink, you forgot to add that you still have to try to find time to WRITE, too!

ann cannon said...

What a day! Loved your description of it.

Big Plain V said...

I noticed two-point-five minutes unaccounted for. Most likely this means you need more children.

To help you make more productive use of all this excess free time.

susieclayton said...

Great point -- I'm a BAHM, Busy at home mom! You sound like one too (I work 20 hours a week pt and have a home business too). Thanks for stopping by my blog -- I'll be back to yours!

Pink Ink said...

Wendy: I can just picture the scene :-).

Prince: I left out writing, didn't? I usually write earlier in the day, before bedlam breaks loose.

What a wonderful wife! You are lucky.

But you know, speaking from personal experience, having "free" time to write during the day is not all that it's cut up to be. I find myself frittering it away on non-writing things. In some ways, I function best when I only have a couple of hours of intense writing time, and then have a life outside of that. Then again, if you have the discipline for it, writing full-time is so much easier then writing on the brain power and energy left from working full-time!

Ann: Thanks!

BPV: 2.5 minutes? Mmm. I could have been flossing then. :-)

Susie: BAHM...that's a fitting name. Feels like it some days, too :-). Thanks for the visit.

Q said...

I hope not every one of your days is like that. Unless you're already insane, in which case it can't get much worse, can it? :-)

Kristi Stevens said...

The "what did you do today" question always kills me. It's so great to see a time line of what gobbles up all the time.

Pink Ink said...

Q: Fortunately, it's mostly my Wednesdays that are crazy like that. And yes, it can't get much worse :-).

Kristi: Thanks for stopping by. I normally don't do a sked (when I do, it's all on post-it notes which I promptly lose), but I literally lifted most of that schedule from a page on my planner.

Oh how many of us can relate?! We just don't do nuttin' do we? Here's to appreciating all you do for your family PInky!!!

Joy said...

Yep, I can SO relate. A few of my family members have been asking me for the past 18 years what I do all day, for crying out loud.

Even now with more down time than ever before I still don't find myself at loose ends - there's plenty to do during the day before the kids get home from school.

April said...

ha ha so true I have often thought of making a detailed list of what I do for my husband so he can see

Quiskaeya said...

Lol - I know all too well those responses from my Hubster. I used to be a SAHM but now I work again. When I was at home I was just as busy "outside" the house as I am now.

jewelstreet said...

That is so true! You never really get to "stay at home" and when you do there is always a ton of work to do. Then most people I have found think you just sit at home eating bon bons and watching soaps.

Maggie Sue Designs said...

I'm a SAHM who is not often home. People leave messages on the answering machine sounding puzzled and saying, "oh I thought I'd just ask a quick question, but I guess you're not in...". Don't count on me being here unless the weather is bad. I don't like driving on icy roads.

Yeah, stay at home indeed! There are days when it's manageable..but when flag football, t-ball, or basketball is in season...that's when everything breaks loose!

What did you do? You were a mom! Great post! More people need to realize that being a SAHM is hard work.

Sarah said...

Happy SITS day!
I can relate to this, some days I think going to work everyday would be less busy!

Tiffany said...

Oh yeah, that's how I stay home too. I'm pretty sure I log more time in the car most days than my husband does with his 30 minute commute to work. It's all worth it though!

Brindi said...

They just truly have no idea.

Erika said...

So on target!! Congrats on your SITS feature!!!

Anna said...

Hahahahah!!! That's a good one! So many people think that SAH moms have it easy. It is so far from that, isn't it?

Karen said...

3 active kids plus horses...yeah, you need a raise :)

Diva Scrapper said...

Currently I'm a SAHM too...recently, well not so recently anymore (7 months now) my hubby lost his job..restructure of his department...so hubby has been home for 7 months...he knows better than to say...What did you do all day?...he's had a taste of life at home..and it's not all gumdrops and daisies.

Safire said...

Haha...that was great. Happy SITS day!

I've never understood the term SAHM.

It should be DACM (drive around creation mom)

I am thinking you were busy. I looked at your list and thought you did a lot of running around.

My sister thinks I just sit home all day on my butt. Great.

Enjoy your SITS Day!

Heather said...

Oh yes, I know that feeling. I'm apparently such a lady of leisure as a SAHM that my husband doesn't understand how on earth I haven't been able to get over for a hair cut (as I've been saying I need to do) for over a week now. I tell him I'm too busy eating bonbons and watching my soap operas. HA.

:)

Happy SITS day! Cheers!

I too am a stay-at-home mom, which I love so,so, much. But I know my shift never ends, my husband works super hard don't get me wrong, but I work 24/7. Sometimes I wish I didn't need sleep. It seems there is always a zillion things to do. But ya know I wouldn't trade it for anything!:)

Jen said...

I so know what you mean, stay at home indeed.

Jamie said...

Oh how I just love those 'stay-at-home' days and when the hubs wants to come home and make a comment...ooo, it'd be all over, hehe.

Bethany said...

LOL. My mom is a "SAHM" mom and I was a "SAH" nanny for years...neither of us stayed home much at all! Too funny :)

Jennifer said...

:) I think that is so funny! I go back and forth thinking about if I'd really want to be a stay at home mom or not... we'll see what happens, One thing I know for sure is it's NOT as easy as it may seem.

Leslie said...

I never really had the option to be a stay-at-home mom. But I'm sure my life would have been as busy as yours and many other stay-at-home mom's. In my situation, I'm a single mom. So, I have to be both... the person who brings home the bacon and the person who bought it, cooked it, served it, and cleaned up afterwards.

mrsbear said...

It's a blessing to be able to stay home, but sometimes, they just don't "get" it.

Blue Castle said...

Yes, it's very true. Being a stay-at-home mom does not mean you get to stay home. It's almost the opposite.

Fairy Princess Garden said...

HA HA! Sounds like my 24hrs post on my blog...I am soo a SAHM, Yeah right only late at night..LOL Therapy 3xWK plus other outside errands just for 1 child, never mind the other 3 and me...I shall rest in the next life.

Xazmin said...

Sounds SOOOO familiar! I have some friends who work outside the home, and sometimes by the "favors" they ask me to do for them during the day because they "have to work", I swear they think all stay at home moms do all day is sit around with nothing better to do than every body elses errands!

Not complaining though - I wouldn't trade it for the world. And my heart goes out to those mothers who would like to stay home, but aren't able to.

Oh, the "What did you do?" question. Aaargh.

I dread hearing that from anyone...including myself! Because, no matter how you try to stack up the busy, busy hours, it's nearly impossible to account for them all.

I think aching feet and a ponytail should be enough to prove: I've not stopped all.day. So leave the details be, tickle my back, and tell me I'm your queen.

Shannon said...

I've been a "stay-at-home"=mom for almost two years... some days it seems I'm busier now than I was when I was working at a job!

I do about 100 great things all day long and just before my husbands gets off work to come home my little "treasures" awake from their naps only to disintegrate the house into total chaos and mayhem - within 20 minutes no less! - which then prompts my husband to come in and sit down and say.... "so what did you do all day?"
Gotta love it.
My best, Lynn

what a fun and pretty blog! Here from SITS. I was an at-home-mom for only 2 years and it was the hardest job I ever had!
